Back from Köln
The whole Köln experience was extremely bewildering. Although I have had a little experience in finding my way around strange countries from when I was younger (incidentally Köln seven years earlier, and Barcelona ten years), a lot of the time I felt out of my depth on this occasion. Even when it came to asking for the most simplest of things — objects I knew the German translation of, I still wouldn’t dare to make contact with strangers. Köln itself is perhaps one of the friendliest cities I have ever visited - it has an air of diversity, and if I spoke German I would consider upping and leaving just as my dad did many years previously. Plus, cool people like micha live close and would be cool to visit.
I think I may revisit at Christmas or new year, but it really depends on how the relationship with my dad develops. He isn’t … mentally ill any more, but he still has a lot of weird things about him that are difficult to handle. I’m not sure if I want to buy back into what I always want to escape from. Meanwhile, I don’t really have many photos to share with you — I only shot two rolls of film and about forty on my digital camera. If there are any nice shots, I’ll be sure to put them online in a series. Otherwise, here are some photos I took around Brighton one day as a test for my confidence. Although I was using a 300mm telephoto, you can see I am still scared to get so close to people.
Suggestions? What do you think? (Apologies for the scans.)
