Just taking a quick break from the spring cleaning that’s going on around the house. The house has been gradually becoming more jumbled with mysterious items such as vintage sewing machines, lighting kits and mountains of recycling appearing everywhere. So what better day to organise than a rainy day, of which there is much of that today.
The weekend was supposed to start off easy and fresh, but such things never occur when you start off saying “I’ll come out for just one drink.” Was supposed to be heading home at a reasonable time (2am) so that I could be up early with KT & Rogi, as we were working in Northampton. It wasn’t quite the case though, as 2am soon rolled into 4am, then 5am, and soon I was still awake without having slept yet (thanks, Dutchman), on the bus to Kt’s feeling a little worse for wear. However, we did make it to Santapod safely. We were working doing some entertainment stuff which involved Rogi and I being dressed as giant stilt-walking zebras, whilst Kt angle grinded some sparks into the audience. Also got to see some fancy cars – not that I know much about cars, at all. The coolness of the cars were pretty much measured by whether fire came out of the back, and what fancy car it was. When people around us spoke of engines etc., Kt and I began to think we were in a foreign land. We got to stand in the galley above the super fast car, which was pretty scary. The whole thing began to shake and it was so loud. Plus.. fire! It made me think of playing Micro Machines when I was a kid…

The evening was great! I got to fling cream pies a la children’s tv into some people’s faces, plus dance around like a wild zebra, and also get angle grinded on my pee-pee. Sparks flying out of my crotch was a great experience! Some photos..

Went to this very odd little American diner next to the hotel in the morning for the biggest breakfast known to man (which then made me feel a bit sick). I, uh, seem to have acquired the coffee cup, too…

Anyway, back to cleaning. Tonight I have an old friend coming over who I haven’t seen in seven years. How strange… We were just kids back then!

A lot of my work isn’t shot in the studio, and though I really do have a good understanding of light in ambient environments, I can be a little bit nervous when shooting in a studio environment, just because I don’t get that much practice. I also primarily shoot women. So, in a double whammy, today I was shooting in a very nice studio setting, and also photographing a guy. I was pretty nervous this morning but I have Doug to thank for his invaluable advice and confidence, and I came out feeling really proud and positive with my understanding of light, and also feeling stupid for always feeling this odd fear of working with male models. So, in my attempt to break down these barriers, I’m going to try and focus more on shooting with men. They will probably be shot in this same space, with similar lighting, just for a sense of continuity without distraction. Anyway, it was so nice to be doing something a little different, ‘cleaner’, even… I’d appreciate your feedback!

I think I have brain clog as every time I sit down to write about the monumental amount of things that have been happening, and are happening, my brain just freezes and I think “Oh I’m too tired” and can’t seem to just get it all out. I keep saying that lots of amazing things are happening, but I don’t seem to be telling you guys what they are! So I swear, I promise, that at some point this week I will map out (even if it’s vaguely, due to my privacy paranoia here) all the wonderful things that are happening. Until then, another self-portait in this Goddamn wonderful building that Rooks and I explored last week or so:
